What To Pack- Hospital Birth

It’s possibly only 10 weeks now until our little bebe will grace us with his or her chubby presence. Packing the hospital bag is a must- whether it’s 3 months prior or 10 minutes before you leave. I’m suggesting to pack earlier in your third trimester because it has made me feel a lot more organised and less stressed about our first baby arriving. I will no doubt pack and re pack these bags a million times before my due date, but at least the basics are ready to go “just in case”.

The below list is based on staying in the hospital for 3x days/nights. Our midwife has explained we could leave after 6x hours if there are no complications. However, we have also heard we will be in for a minimum of 3x days until my milk comes in. Sooooo with these mixed opinions, i’ve basically packed everything bar my kitchen sink “just in case”.

If you can think of anything else we are missing, please leave a comment below xxx

    Hi Kyree,
Now that beautiful little Alaska is here, would you revise this list? Is there anything you didn’t use or other things you wished you’d taken in? It’s a great list to begin with and all the comments are very helpful! I’d just be interested to hear you thoughts post birth. Congratulations on your beautiful little bundle of chubby goodness!

    Hi Kyree,
Thank you for sharing what you have packed! I’m due second week of January however this is my second pregnancy in less than 14 months so it was such a good updated refresh of what is needed! I actually had a super quick natural labour and birth first time round to the point where we didn’t have any time to go back to the car for our things! I’ve read a few of the comments and agree with everyone and you have probably done a lot since you posted this but don’t forget about your man! Whatever you think he might need so that he doesn’t need to leave you and your new babe for a second! All the best. XX

There are methods such as geo location, statistics, human behavior analysis and other features that are taken into consideration while providing the Instagram bot service by the Instagram Like Bot firm. The follow and unfollow service is also listed there for Instagram users to make their own decisions as per the situation. The blog available at the website is a great way through which you can learn the changes in the features and the benefits you can avail. http://instagramlikebot.com/

    Hi Kyree,
Loved reading this. Even though my youngest is six mths old now I just love seeing baby bag blogs and new baby stuff. It’s all so exciting and wonderful!
So many amazing recommendations, from my experience a firm breastfeeding pillow is a lifesaver, you can use it for propping your neck/legs up too as the beds can be uncomfortable and my milkbar one was so handy with feeding as I had a really sore arm from the drips going wrong and bruised and I couldn’t hold my first baby due to that!

Also a gro-hush which is a white noise machine. I used it from day 1 so my baby would be used to it and it has helped every sleep to this day! Also just a whole pack of nappies so you don’t worry about running out. My first had 10changes a day, my second only a handful.

Also flip flops for the shower!!!

A head scarf in case you don’t want to wash your hair in hospital (Chinese culture says to keep warm & not let your head get cold)
Extra baby blankets as its so cold in hospital and nice to hold them in something that’s theirs from day one for memories ๐Ÿ™‚
Cannot wait to see your newborn pics and hope the birth goes smooth and safe for you all.
    Lots of love!

Looks like you’ve got it covered! I would recommend hydrogel breastpads – absolute life savers if the feeding hurts a bit.

All the best, you will do fab!!!

Don’t forget about daddy- a clean shirt or too for pictures, tooth brush, aftershave and deodorant ๐Ÿ™‚ xx

Such exciting times!! ๐Ÿ˜„ I would add a jumper/cardi for yourself as it gets really cold in the hospital! And a couple of dresses in the off chance you end up with a c section as shorts will feel too tight and sore. Mittens for bubs hands, it’s amazing how much they scratch their faces and again, the hospital can be really cold. As for labour, if you’re fussy like I was I suggest a shower cap to keep your hair dry if you have a shower. xx

  8. October 7, 2016 / 6:27 am

I would definetly add 10 pads and 10 or more nappies, even keep some in the boot of the car so you don’t have to lug them in to the hospital and hubby can just go grab them when needed. Singlets with buttons on the crotch for bubba for under onesies. Loose black pants or a dress for after birth comfort. And at least 6 onesies for baby, their first poo is almost black tar so be prepared haha it goes everywhere! One or 2 Love to dream zip swaddles were amazing also. Enjoy the amazing experience and don’t stress to much about everything being perfect in hospital just enjoy the moment, Instagram perfection can wait x

Just saw your IG post with your gorgeous pram and the cover pegged to it. I’m not normally one to post a ‘don’t do this’ comment, but this is one thing I hope you read up on.

Covering prams can be very dangerous as they can heat up inside, similar to a car. Especially important with hot WA summers. Make sure you get an appropriate, breathable cover.

Here is a link to some info, but I’m sure there’s more available if you research http://www.kidspot.com.au/baby/real-life/in-the-news/warning-the-dangerous-pram-mistake-were-all-making

This is very important! Not only for hot days, but always. The air inside the pram will be standing still, getting hot and poorly oxygenated. I come from Norway, and here this is the biggest no-no! Your instagram post would have exploded with comments about the blanket, if this was a norwegian post! ;p

With that said I have to add that I LOVE your instagram account and your style all over! So elegant and modern, and the colors! So inspiring! Thank you!

      Good luck with everything! โ™กโ™ก

How exciting! I’m currently 20 weeks and just starting to get bits and bobs here and there, so it’s really good to read about what other moms-to-be are gathering and packing for their hospital bags to get a bit of a idea – I’ve certainly picked up on a few ideas I hadn’t previously thought of, so big thanks to you! And all the best for the upcoming arrival of your little one!

So exciting for you! A few more pairs of BIG knickers, extra pads. Mainly 0000 clothes for Bub. A hairdryer to dry off which is especially helpful to use on cool if you have stitches. Frozen witch hazel pads which the hospital should provide if you can’t find them. A heat pack for when your milk comes in, I was so surprised how painful my boobies were when my milk came and I was given hot gel packs and also I was put on a pump to express in hospital as I had sooooo much milk. Lanolin cream for nipples. I stayed in hospital for 5 nights and whatever I needed and didn’t pack or ran out of the hospital provided so don’t be afraid to ask for what you need. Also a salt lamp of some battery operated candles would be perfect for those night feeds. All the best xx

I’m due the same week as you and have just reviewed my hospital list from babe #1 (17mo) so this post is very topical. I second Wayyy more undies and a few spare pairs of PJ bottoms. I Second ural, bag of prunes also really handy for similar reason!

Can take Arnica tabs (traumeel is a brilliant product) every hour for a few days post birth for speedy recovery of muscles and bruising etc.

our hospital had mat pads soaked in water, cut in half and kept in ward freezer for use in undies on sore spots – absolutely brilliant relief!!

Pump water bottle to dilute your wee if you have stitches is also great if not using ural. So is own soft toilet paper (hospital stuff is often like sandpaper!).

Singlets are definitely the go instead of ones that have crotch button as if they leak/explode, you’ll have to change the button crotch ones but not plain singlets.

Wipes of choice as usually hospital just have alcohol based ones. Also second the above advice on using only water on baby. Coconut oil is great for most things – scaly newborn skin, cradle cap, nappy rash, massage – is antibacterial and anti fungal.

Crop top or bikini top for birthing in and using in shower in labour is great with big oversized t shirt you aren’t precious about getting stained.

Lollies for labour or post labour energy boost is good, as is some hydralite in your drink bottle.

    Good luck, you’ll ace this!!

    Hi Kyree,

    Such an exciting time!

We packed a few size 00000 onesies – hard to believe but sometimes even the 0000 are too big for bub for the first few days to a week (or longer)

    All the best

    Caris xx

You won’t need burp clothes for hospital. Also don’t use standard singlets, get the ones that do up under the nappy. They are the only ones I used until they stopped wearing them. I would also steer clear of any type of body wash for bub. Their skin is so sensitive. The best thing is just plain water or even QV cream.

Defintely get more black underwear. You will go through a least 3 a day and will just want to throw them after one use. I bought the cheapest I could find. Get an eye mask as there is nothing worse than trying to sleep during the day.

Think about what type of clothing you want to birth in. You may not want to wear a gown and you may not want to go completely starkers. Again, something you’re happy to throw away afterwards. Are you planning on having any music during birth?

What about massage during labour? I actually became super touch sensitive in labour, due to it being quite quick ( 3hrs – thank you Radpberry Leaf Tea!) and I couldn’t stand it. Poor hubby – he was so prepared for that to be his contribution.

Something no one told me was how much you sweat when you sleep for the first few nights, so spare PJs are a good idea. Even if you don’t pack then, pack a couple of day packs for hubby to bring in each day which has spare undies, spare PJs and maternity pads. Just means your bag isn’t so huge for the first night. I found the air very drying in hospital, so a nourishing mousturiser, face mist and eye drops/spray.

Thanks for sharing! It’s good to feel organised! I would also add baby wipes as well as nappies (unless I missed seeing them on your list) our hospital provided both nappies and wipes but you may have a preference for wipes you are planning to use. Also agree with the other ladies – more undies – as you might go through a couple of pairs a day from leakage and just general ickiness down there. I’ve experienced two C-sections and full-briefs (like Bonds cottontails) were the comfiest for me personally. Best of luck!

I second the nipple cream, it saved my life! I also brought my own pillow. And my own towel (the towels at the hospital were scratchy and small!).

Another thing I would HIGHLY recommend is a nursing pillow. I had a Boppy and I used it the entire time.

    Much love to you!

Hi Hun, I was in for an elective c-section so I packed my own pillow and faux fur blanket. It was nice to have something from home for my comfort knowing I was staying for 3 nights, as well as the pillow being for my neck issues. I didn’t pack any baby wash, you only tend to wash newborns in warm water and the longer they go without a bath, the softer the skin ๐Ÿ™‚ Good luck with your new chapter xo

Hello kyree! Such an exciting time, can’t wait to see the baby spam. I can’t recommend Lansinoh (all natural) nipple cream enough. A lifesaver for sore and in shock nipples – gets you through until they suddenly have superhuman strength and can take all the sucking and pulling. Also, reckon you could ditch the hand sanitizer – latest studies show they aren’t that great and linked to cancer. (!) my maternal health nurse said standard soap was the way to go but I didn’t listen until I read the study on hand sanitizer being so bad… ๐Ÿ™ Anywaaa, happy packing. Beautiful or fun slippers are also suuuuper X

I’d probably add more nappies too. But I guess your husband can bring more in if needed.

    Hey Ky!

One thing that I didn’t realise is newborns scratch themselves on the face by accident when their arms fling out. I used newborn socks in lieu of mittens in the hospital but wish I had packed a pair to protect little ones eyes and face from himself! My little one would always break out of his swaddle so containing his arms/ hands was a challenge.

I also second taking waaaay more knickers and pads, also be mindful of where the knicker and your pants sit on you while they’re on, I had an emergency C-section so wasn’t prepared for the scar position and was told off by a nurse for where my pants and knickers were sitting – on the scar!

Best of luck with it all, you’re very prepared and have packed everything that I did too ๐Ÿ™‚ xx

  21. October 5, 2016 / 4:55 am

You’re very well prepared and what a beautiful selection of goodies for you and baby – one thing that I swear by when starting breastfeeding is a good nipple cream like Lansinoh, it helps nourish and protect and also provide healing properties for those wee nips that just aren’t used to all the attention :p

Also – a larger quantity of knickers, make sure they aren’t too saggy though, you’ll want some extra support to hold those amazing surfboard pads.

    Super glamorous right? haha

Can’t wait to “meet” your wee babe and hope the birth goes well! So very exciting!

    xo

ps. Thanks for including my wee Buck and Baa Bonnets

    Hey Kyree

Definitely pack some Ural and drink HEAPS of water to neutralise your urine. It will make going to the bathroom for the first time a lot more bearable. It sounds crazy but my son was 8lb 12oz (3.9kg) and he fitted nicely in 00000 while in hospital and for the following week at home then it was 0000 for a couple of months. I’d also pack your own baby blanket(s) and warm clothes for you. I had a January baby but the hospital was freeeezing!! Good luck and thanks for sharing your amazing list!

Very organised! I would just suggest more undies and more pads. I know it’s gross but it can be quite difficult to contain the bleeding ๐Ÿ™
Also, a few more onesies wouldn’t hurt, sometimes bub’s legs and bum are too small and the nappies don’t fit snug which can mean some leakage.
Good luck, in any event you have a helpful family so anything you need on the spot I’m sure someone can duck out and get…. although my hubby was a bit nervous about buying the pads!

Wow you are one organised mumma!!! Gorgeous selection – but nothing will be as cute as your babe when they arrive! What saved me – pack a couple of plastic straws – I can’t believe my husband actually thought of this but they were a god send during labour as hubby would hold the cup and I would just sip. And we played the music from our favourite hotel – just chill out music – which made us both more relaxed (well as relaxed as you can be!) and I dozzed off at one point and had a little daydream about being there! Not long now!
